The fire in Cahul affected 12.4 hectares of forest and 7.6 hectares of land covered with vegetation, owned by the local public administration. Seven years and over 600,000 lei will be needed to bring the forest back to the state it was in before the fire, IPN reports, referring to the Ministry of Environment’s estimates.
The Ministry warns the citizens to be extremely cautious when starting fires or when using easily flammable products as the damage caused to the environment by the fire is very serious and it is sometimes impossible to restore the damage and significant costs are incurred.
The fire that engulfed the forest on the outskirts of Cahul was extinguished after almost eight hours. The State Weather Service extended the yellow warning for fire danger until July 22.
