After protesting last week outside the EU Delegation headquarters in Chisinau, today members and supporters of the Shor Party and the Bloc of Communists and Socialists staged a similar demonstration outside the United States Embassy. The protesters, including MPs, railed at the U.S. for “tolerating” the “violation of the opposition rights” by the PAS government.

“The embassies of Western countries supported PAS coming to power. But now, a year after this party took over total power in the Republic of Moldova, the same embassies pretend that they don’t see the abuses, violations and dictatorial ways of the PAS and Maia Sandu”, declared BCS lawmaker Diana Caraman. According to her, the opposition is “suppressed and deprived of any rights”, while political opponents “are bombarded with criminal cases and the most vocal opposition leaders are kept behind bars”.

“The current government has started an extensive process of purging inconvenient politicians. Under the pretext of fighting corruption, fabricated and politically motivated cases are being started. Without fair trial and with no evidence, the politicians who oppose the regime are being put behind bars”, Caraman added.

Shor Party MP Vadim Fotescu said the protesters were there to tell the Embassy about “the political persecution of opposition representatives”, especially “the illegal detention” of the lawmaker Marina Tauber. According to him, holding his colleague behind bars is “not legally justified” and the diplomatic mission is asked to react. “We urge you to determine your position and make it clear to the governing party that it cannot establish a dictatorial regime in the country, and that it must respect internationally recognized democratic principles instead”, said Fotescu.
