Government control in the health sector will be exercised by one authority – the National Public Health Agency, IPN reports, quoting a bill agreed by the Cabinet.

The new institution will take over the duties of the National Public Health Center, the National Health Insurance Company, the Transplant Agency, the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices and the Standing Drugs Control Committee.

The newly created authority will also monitor the observance of consumers’ rights in healthcare instead of the National Food Safety Agency and the Consumer Protection Agency. The post of state sanitary doctor, which is now held by the deputy minister of health, will be excluded in a move to prevent persons with political positions from influencing decisions taken as a result of state control.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip reiterated that the current system is outdated and should be restructured. “The public health system is the most important one in healthcare because we speak here about the prevention of disease and working out of relevant policies,” he stated.

The bill is to be submitted to Parliament for consideration and adoption.
