Six persons lost their lives in three car accidents in southern Moldova over the last 24 hours. Two of them were children. The three accidents made the Ministry of the Interior to call on the population to mobilize and improve road safety, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The first accident happened in Taraclia district, where a car struck three minors, killing two of them. The driver was under the influence of alcohol and is now under arrest.
Several hours later, three persons died in a road accident blamed on speeding. Soon afterward, a speeding car crashed into a tree. The driver died on the spot.
Mihai Cebotaru, the head of the Interior Ministry's Public Order Division, said there should be adopted a new approach to issues concerning road safety, including teaching road safety in schools.
In a news conference on December 11, the Traffic Police's head Gheorghe Botnariuc said the 2,587 road accidents that happened in Moldova this year ended in 433 deaths, including of 34 children, and 3,145 persons injured. He confirmed that the Traffic Police employees will be accredited, but the move is part of a general strategy for organizing the Ministry by modifying its structure.
As to the new Code of Administrative Offenses, Botnariuc said that it evidently influences the behavior of the participants in the traffic.
