Six employees of the National Public Security Inspectorate were detained on suspicion that they asked and received money from drivers for not documenting traffic violations. On Tuesday morning, law enforcement officers conducted over 20 searches in a passive corruption case and, subsequently, another 24 criminal cases were initiated on the same facts, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center (NAC), from September 2023 until now, the employees of the Inspectorate’s Northern Traffic Police Division allegedly asked and received money from people who violated the Road Traffic Regulations. So as not to impose penalties, they asked for amounts ranging from €200 lei to €700. The investigations started from the case of a man who, being stopped by traffic police officers, was told to pay €600 for not being registered for driving under the influence.

NAC officers documented several cases of asking for money from drivers for these not to be punished for speeding. Thus, in exchange for money, the police deleted the stored photo and video recordings with the violations from the SD memory card of the TruCAM device.

The searches were carried out in the company and personal cars of the traffic police officers, at the head office of the Soroca and Floresti Traffic Police Service, as well as at the homes of the persons concerned. Financial resources in such currencies as lei, euros, hryvnias and rubles, mobile phones, a Dräger device, a TruCam, registers, records and draft documents were found at their homes and seized.

The individuals were arrested for 72 hours and will be remanded in custody.
