The Socialist Party are announcing protest rallies throughout the country, beginning on August 27, when Moldova celebrates Independence Day.

This was announced at a news conference today by the party's leader Igor Dodon, who deplored the fact that twenty-four years into its independence, Moldova has become “a state captured by oligarchs and unificationists”.

“In 24 years of being independent, Moldova hasn't managed to equal the level of economic development recorded before 1991. Today, Moldova has a GDP by one-third smaller than in 1989. In industry and agriculture, production has dropped by 45%. In order to come up to the 1989 level of production, Moldova would need at least 5-7 years of constant economic growth at a pace of 12-15% annually, in addition to effective and well-coordinated actions in economy and social policy”, said Igor Dodon.

Dodon went on to add that his party believes early general elections to be the only solution “in order to stop the Republic of Moldova from being destroyed”.
