Sympathizers and members of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) on September 16 protested against the increase in power and heat tariffs in front of the head office of the National Agency for Energy Regulation. They demanded to institute a moratorium and to diminish tariffs, IPN reports.

MP Vlad Batrancea, who is the PSRM’s executive secretary, said the people came to the Agency’s head office to say that they do not intend to repay the stolen US$1billion out of their own pocket.

Socialist councilor in Chisinau Alexandr Komarov, ex-director of the Thermoelectric Plant 2, said the increase in tariffs is not justified. “Moldelectrica” was created based on three enterprises with the aim of optimizing work in the given area. In reality, it is the opposite. Instead of creating new efficient working mechanisms, the administration suggests tariffs rises.

In a public meeting on September 16, the Administration Board of the National Agency for Energy Regulation, at the request of the public utility “Termoelectrica”, approved a new heat tariff for the end-users of Chisinau municipality. The tariff is 1,068.22 lei per gigacalorie, up 81.22 lei (8.2%) on the current tariff that has been used since 2011. “Termoelectrica” asked that the tariff should be raised by 27.4%.
