Several thousand people took part in a protest mounted on the occasion of the Workers Day and in the march “For Moldova in the Customs Union” that were organized by the Party of Socialists (PSRM) in Chisinau. The participants in the protests came to the square of the National Opera House “Maria Biesu” with red flags, IPN reports.
The leader of the PSRM Igor Dodon said that 265,000 signatures in favor of Moldova’s entry into the Customs Union have been collected during three weeks. The collection of signatures will go on until they collect 1,000,000. Afterward, the signatures will be submitted to the government and the European partners to show that the Moldovans do not want to form part of the EU.
“We demand asking the people about the country’s external course by a referendum. I promise that our party will not form a coalition with a party that is against Russia. After the elections, we will form a coalition only with the parties that are for the Customs Union,” said the leader of the Socialists.
Igor Dodon added that the PSRM will insist on providing a special status to the Russian language on Moldova’s territory. As to the Transnistrian dispute, federalization is the only solution. “Those who say that we are Romanians must know that Moldova is our country and we will give it to no one,” he stated.
He added that tents of the PSRM will be put up in the center of Chisinau in several weeks. Passersby will be able to put their signatures in favor of joining the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union there. “I’m sure that our future is only near Russia,” stated Igor Dodon.
The protest involved people who came to demand higher pensions and salaries and workplaces at home.
