The households that consist of two persons continue to prevail in Moldova, with a share of 23.9%, according to the 2014 population census. Ten years earlier, these represented 22.8%. The share of households consisting of one person rose from 20.3% to 22.6%, while the share of households formed of four and more persons decreased to 33.8% from 35.7% in 2004, IPN reports.
In urban areas, each second household consists of one-two persons, while each fifth – of two-three persons. The same trends persist in rural areas. About 39% of the households consist of three-four persons, but the solitary households tend to increase, while those consisting of five and more persons tend to decrease, representing 17.4% and 18.8% respectively.
Some 64% of the solitary households consist of women. The average age of solitary persons is of 62.3: 58.2 in urban areas and 63.6 in rural ones.
Of the total households covered by the census, 38% have children (under 18), a decrease of 7% on 2004. The families with one child represent 53.8%, those with two children 35.6%, while those with three and more chidden 10.6%, as against 11.5% in 2004.
The results of the 2014 census were made public on March 31, almost three years of the collection of data.
