The Soroca Fortress will reopen its doors to visitors on May 16. On this occasion, a medieval festival will be staged at the fortress. Contacted by phone by IPN, director of the Museum of Ethnography and History Soroca Fortress Nicolae Bulat said that a series of cultural events will be held on May 16 and 17, on the occasion of the International Museum Day.

Nicolae Bulat noted that the initial project to reconstruct the Soroca Fortress envisioned the restoration of the entrance tower and of the roof of a round tower. However, as a result of the fluctuations in the exchange rate of the Moldovan leu, additional money was obtained and all the fortress’ towers were thus restored. There was also repaired the guard road and the floor in towers. The terrace on the cellars was hydro-insulated. The entrance stairs were repaired and a chapel is being set up inside the main tower.

The courtyard and adjoining areas are now being laid out. Stalls will be put up in front of the fortress to sell works made by children from Soroca district. Three access roads to the fortress are being rehabilitated within the same project, with the funds allocated by the Government and the Soroca District Council, 10 million lei overall.

Nicolae Bulat said the Museum of Ethnography and History Soroca Fortress will also apply to the second stage of the Moldova – Romania Cross-Border Project, within which there will be reconstructed the wooden gallery around the main tower. There will be purchased showcases and flags and will be exhibited models of old arms and epoch objects as well as items discovered during the archeological excavations near the fortress that lasted for three years.

Entrance tickets will cost 3 lei for children and 5 lei for grownups. The reconstruction works started on May 18, 2012.
