Money for the rehabilitation of protection levees will be earmarked in the state budget, President Igor Dodon stated after the meeting of seniors state officials. He noted the decision was taken in connection with the risks of flooding on the Prut and the Nistru following the heavy rain in northern Moldova and in the neighboring states, IPN reports.
“During the past 12 years, after the last serious inundation, no considerable investments were made in the restoration of levees. That’s why, together with the Prime Minister, we considered the issue and instructed that an assessment should be carried out immediately so as to budget funds for the rehabilitation of levees,” stated President Dodon.
He noted that the flooded areas will also be assessed. As many as 642 hectares situated along the Prut and 84 hectares located along the Nistru have been flooded by now.
The depth of the Nistru in Otaci is of 4.5 meters, while of the Prut in Lipcani is of 6.1 meters. The risks of flooding on the Nistru, near in Ştefan Vodă, and on the Prut, near Cahul, persist.
