For the first time in Moldova, surgery was performed to remove an acoustic neuroma by the translabyrinthine approach in a 43-year-old patient. The operation was performed by representatives of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Moldova together with a team of doctors from Kiev, at “Timofei Moșneaga” Republican Clinical Hospital, IPN reports.
According to professor Sergiu Vetricean, head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, the novelty resides in the removal of the tumor located in the cerebellopontine angle and the internal auditory canal by the translabyrinthine approach. “As a rule, in our country, such operations are performed by neurosurgeons through the retrosigmoid approach, while otologists around the world apply the translabyrinthine approach in such tumors. That’s why we asked our colleagues in Kiev to help us in this regard,” said the head of department.
Professor Oleg Borysenko, of the Institute of Otolaryngology in Ukraine, has over 30 years’ experience in performing operations according to the translabyrinthine approach. It is a more harmless technique that is less traumatic for the patient. “Worldwide, such surgeries have been performed for a long time, but for us they had to outfit hospitals with medical equipment and train staff in this regard. Today we seek to tackle tumors from a different perspective and by using new equipment. We want young doctors to also learn this technique,” stated Oleg Borysenko.
Ukrainian professor Oleg Borysenko two years ago participated in an operation to remove a vestibular schwannoma by the translabyrinthine approach, performed at “Diomid Gherman” Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Chisinau. It was a novelty for national medicine.
