A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for a number of episodes of fraud as a result of which he managed to enrich himself with almost half a million lei, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the defendant in 2016 convinced a person to buy for him a mobile phone at the price of about 17,000 lei and a laptop at the price of over 5,000 lei on credit. He abused the victim’s trust and promised to pay the monthly installments, but later avoided meeting that person.
A year later, he convinced another person to purchase a phone on credit, at the price of almost 9,000 lei. He managed to convince another victim to buy a laptop on credit, at the price of 8,000 lei, under the same pretext, without the intention of honoring his obligations. The same year, he swindled a person out of over 83,000 lei and two other victims out of almost 59,000 lei and, respectively, 32,000 lei through the same criminal scheme.
In October 2017, he paid an advance of US$2,000 for an Infinity FX 45 car worth €13,000 to a leasing company and subsequently shirked his obligations and, without having legal powers, left Moldova to Ukraine with the car, traveling in an unknown direction.
In total, the injured parties were caused over 444,000 lei damage.
The Buiucani Court of Chisinau City sentenced the man to 11 years in a semi-closed prison.
