The 18th national amateur tennis championship has opened. Seventy-five athletes from five towns as well as tennis players from abroad will compete in the three-day tournament, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The amateur tennis championship is traditionally organized by the Association of Tennis Veterans and Amateurs. We hope that this year the competition will be as successful as the previous years. We are trying to cultivate a sports culture among the participants and the rest of the people,” the championship's manager Vladimir Prepelita told a news conference.
The singles include two age categories – under 45 and above 45. The doubles consist of a joint event. The aggregate age of the players of the pair must be more than 80 years. This restriction was imposed in order to balance the game value of the pairs, Vladimir Prepelita said.
The championship is hosted by the Tennis Club “Locomotiva – 777”. It brings together players from Chisinau, Balti, Tiraspol, Tighina and Cahul. Among the favorites are Slavian Gutu, Vladimir Iampolschi, Veaceslav Dodu, Adrian Mariciuc, Denis Jivelco, Samvel Minasian and the holder of a record number of titles of champion Igor Cuznetsov (10 titles of champion in singles and seven in doubles.”
The final will take place on September 26.
