Moldovan boxer Valeriu Carma is close to qualifying for the London Olympics, Info-Prim Neo reports. On April 17, he qualified for the quarterfinals in the 49kg class at the European qualifying tournament taking place in Turkey’s Trabzon, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Carma beat Estonia’s Kiril Serikov and will face Bulgaria’s Aleksander Aleksandrov on April 18. They will fight for a place at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Moldovan boxers Dumitru Galagot (64kg) and Vladimir Cheles (91kg) also hope to qualify for the London Olympics. They both went through to the quarterfinals, but are yet to win the competition in Turkey.
The leader of the national squad Veaceslav Gojan, who became a European champion in 2011 and medaled bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games, was eliminated from the 1/8 finals by Ukraine’s Pavlo Ishchenko and will thus not take part in the most important world competition.
Only a Moldovan boxer has so far qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Vasile Belous ranked among the top ten at the world champs last year.
