A 76-old-man is in critical condition after being struck by a passenger train in Tiraspol. Eye-witnesses said the train operator sounded a long horn signal to avoid the accident, but the elderly man didn’t react. It is believed the man may suffer from hearing loss, as a hearing aid was found at the scene.
The local press reports that the residents of the city’s Zapadny neighborhood routinely cross the tracks to get to their land plots or to the local cemetery. The man was struck exactly in this area by a train going from Chisinau to Odessa.
On this segment the speed limit is 80km/h. The operator hit the brakes hard, but the train came to a stop only several hundreds meters away. The man was rushed to a hospital and admitted to intensive care after suffering severe head injuries and a fractured leg.
