Traian Basescu met with military honors

Traian Basescu has arrived in Chisinau. The Romanian head of state was met at the State Residence with military honors. A group of demonstrators coming from the Alley of Classical Writers carried the tricolor and chanted: “Union!”, “Basescu!”. On the other side of the square of the State Residence, the Russian Youth League staged a counter-protest, chanting: “Down with the Union!”, IPN reports.

Traian Basescu is paying an official visit to Moldova at the invitation of President Nicolae Timofti. After the ceremony at the State Residence, the two officials will hold consultations and will then give a joint news conference at 11am.

The Romanian head of state will have meetings with Speaker Igor Corman, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, and Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. He will also have discussions with the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat, the head of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu and the Liberal Party chairman Mihai Ghimpu. Later, Traian Basescu will lay flowers at the monument to ruler Stephan the Great and Holy, while in the evening will have a meeting with representatives of Moldova’s civil society and the clergy.
