The fare for international trips by train will rise by 5-7%. The changes will take effect on April 9 and will apply to the train routes Chisinau-Moscow and Chisinau-Saint Petersburg that cross the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Contacted by IPN, Deputy Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Valeriu Ciubuc said the rise is insignificant, but was necessary in order to cover a part of the costs incurred by the state-run company “Calea Ferata din Moldova” (“Moldova’s Railroads”) last year.

“The increase is insignificant because the fare for an international trip represents the costs of transportation via Ukraine and Russia and through Moldova to a lesser extent. The prices of train tickets haven’t been raised for four years,” said Valeriu Ciubuc.
