Over 200,000 cartridges for AK pistols and more than 4.5 kg of white mercury were found by the police within an operation launched to investigate the activity of a transnational criminal group, which is suspected of preparing very serious attacks that were to be staged on the country’s territory, IPN reports.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, the 12 members of the group had been monitored by the police for about two months. It was established that the criminal group was to use arms and munitions, including chemical weapons, to destabilize public order in the country, possibly in order to promote external interests.
The police determined that considerable quantities of white mercury and offensive munitions, mainly of Russian make, were smuggled from the Transnistrian region on the right bank of the Nistru between December 2015 and January 2016.
A criminal case was started over creation and management of an illegal organization. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 8 to 15 years in jail or life. The investigations continue. Only one person has been arrested so far.
