Flowers were laid today at the bust of Grigore Vieru on the Alley of Classics in the central park of Chisinau, on the day the poet would have turned 89, IPN reports.
Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan reminded that the National Reading Day is marked also on the birthday of the great bard Grigore Vieru. Today is a day that reminds us that we, as human beings, are obliged not to drop the book from our hands because the book is the pillar that forms us throughout life.
Deputy mayor of Chisinau Angela Kutasevich noted that Grigore Vieru, through his simplicity and beauty, penetrated everyone’s hearts. “We are the ones who grew up on Grigore Vieru’s lyrics and, in fact, Grigore Vieru was the one who shaped our souls, our hearts and he will always remain in our memory,” said the deputy mayor, noting that educational classes, poetic moments dedicated to poet Grigore Vieru and also poetry recitals are held today in all schools of the capital city.
Grigore Vieru was one of the resistance figures of the national renaissance period of the 1990s, writing the well-known lyrics for the patriotic songs “Singing our writing”, “In your language”, “For her”. In his poems, he evoked such sacred values as the mother, the homeland, nature, love. His works educate generations, starting with “Albinuța”, a book for preschoolers, and the primer “Abecedarul” that he wrote together with Spiridon Vangheli. Grigore Vieru’s poetry can be found in most Romanian literature textbooks for secondary and high school students. The poet passed away on January 18, 2009 in the hospital, after being involved in a car accident a few days earlier.
