Judge Tudor Pantaru on May 12 was elected president of the Constitutional Court (CC) for a three-year period. He replaced ex-president Alexandru Tanase, whose term in office expired, IPN reports.

According to the Constitutional Court, the new president was elected by secret vote. Tudor Pantaru was named judge of the CC in February 2013. He is a graduate of the Law Faculty of the State University of Moldova. Earlier, he was a member of Moldova’s Parliament, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Moldova to the UN. He was also president of the UN Commercial Tribunal, international judge at the European Court of Human Rights and at the Constitutional Court in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The term in office of Alexandru Tanase as a constitutional judge expired this April. The seat declared vacant was occupied Victoria Iftodi as a result of a contest. In the May 12 sitting of Parliament, Iftodi was sworn in at a ceremony in the presence of Igor Dodon and president of the Superior Court of Magistracy Victor Micu.
