Two helicopters spray forests with pesticide

The forests managed by “Moldsilva” Agency will be sprayed with chemicals against caterpillars and other pests eating trees’ leaves with the help of two helicopters during almost three weeks. The Agency’s director Ion Lupu has told Info-Prim Neo that the danger posed by defoliating pests was ascertained as a result of researches made by specialists of forest companies in cooperation with the Forest Research and Management Institute. The forests in Edinet, Hancesti, Telenesti, and Straseni are the most affected. There will be treated 22,000 hectares of forests or 1/15 of the wooded areas of Moldova. The authorities assured that the chemicals used to spray the forests do not endanger the humans and animals. The costs have not been yet determined, but are estimated to amount to several million lei. The spraying will end by May 20. The forests managed by “Moldsilva” occupy an area of 340,000 hectares.
