Two men were found dead this morning in an Orhei home after inhaling toxic fumes from a smoldering fire.

Civil Protection spokesperson Diana Turcan said the firefighters were alerted at around 6:30. As the fire was almost flameless, neither the building nor contents were affected, except for the bed and bedclothes, which emanated the deadly smoke.

The victims were living in the house temporarily as the owner was abroad. One of the men was 47, and the other's age is being established.

From the beginning of the year there were recorded 1800 fires that took 125 lives. The firefighters on Friday launched an awareness raising campaign to caution the public of fire hazards.
