The Centru district court Friday passed judgment in one of the cases concerning the April 7, 2009 events. A policeman and a policewoman were dismissed and given suspended sentences in the case of sisters Oxana and Ludmila Radu, who were maltreated in the police station, forced to undress and humiliated by police officers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The man was given five years’ probation and will serve six years in jail if he commits offenses in the period. The woman was put on probation for the same period and will be imprisoned for five years if she breaks the law meanwhile.
The convicts did not make statements for the press. The victims’ lawyer Natalia Molosag said that today’s sentence is a victory of the Radu sisters. “They were ultimately compensated for their sufferings. It is a victory of all the lawyers who defended victims of the April 2009 events because this is the first conviction under Article 309 of the Penal Code, which refers to crime, torture and others,” she said. The plaintiffs did not attend the hearing.
The decision can be appealed to the Court of Appeals within 15 days.
One of the sisters, Oxana Radu, was awarded by the UN Office in Moldova for contesting the impunity in the April 7, 2009 events.
