The deputy head of the General Inspection Division of the State Tax Service and a tax inspector from Soroca were detained in a case of influence peddling and passive corruption following a denunciation. Four more people are investigated as suspects, IPN reports.

The National Anticorruption Center (NAC) said that the State Tax Service’s employee is suspected of taking bribe from an inferior in exchange for setting the bonus to the monthly salary at the maximum value provided by law, in two episodes. Thus, through an intermediary, but also personally, she allegedly accepted and received 1,000 lei in one episode and 6,000 lei in another episode.

Also, following a number of searches in the homes, cars and offices of the civil servants, cash, objects and documents with a total value of 1,500,000 lei were seized.

The searches take place within corruption cases started over illicit actions of employees of the State Tax Service, of local offices based in Balti, Soldanesti, Soroca, Falesti and Floresti.

Starting with 2023 and until now, employees of the Service’s General Inspection Division in the five localities allegedly asked and received funds from various taxpayers for concealing fiscal violations, including accepted VAT refund contrary to predetermined rules, the amount of the bribe constituting 10% of the refunded amount.

Reacting to the given information, the State Tax Service said that the institution is open to cooperation and provides all the necessary support to the law enforcement agencies in the elucidation of the case. At the same time, it dissociates itself from the tax officials who commit acts of corruption in their work and reiterates its commitment to continue work in the spirit of legality, transparency, fairness and responsibility.
