The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has donated requisite furniture to four admission wards of the Chisinau Municipal Clinical Hospital No.1, Info-Prim Neo reports. The admission sections were outfitted with couches for the waiting halls, computer desks and chairs, a wardrobe for storing medical clothing and other furniture worth about 200,000 lei in all. Victor Savin, the director of the Hospital, said that the admission section is a key subdivision of any hospital. The patients and relatives get the first impression of the hospital in the given section. The donation is very important given that the furniture in the Hospital has not been changed since the institution began to work in 1986. As a rule, the furniture in a health institution is used for 15-20 years, the director said. Victor Savin also said that the Hospital has cooperated with the UNFPA for many years, especially in training the medical personnel, under the theme “Maternity without Risk”. According to the director, the maternity ward of the Municipal Clinical Hospital No.1 in 207 saw a record number of newborns – 7,000. This is twice more than in 2000, when this figure was 3,800 babies. In January 2008, there were born by 80 children more than in January 2007. The UNFPA Director for Moldova Marlene Francois Lays, who is on her first fact-finding visit to Moldova between February 19 and 21, said that UNFPA is proud to offer assistance to this and other hospitals because it is a great thing to help the pregnant women feel comfortable in the maternity ward. The donation was made as part of the Assistance and Cooperation Programme between UNFPA and the Government of Moldova for 2007 – 2011. The UN official will visit the Transnistrian region and meet with representatives of different nongovernmental organisations that enlighten and educate the youth there. The program of the visit to Moldova also includes a roundtable meeting that will be attended by the UNFPA partners in implementing the Assistance and Cooperation Programme for 2007 – 2011. The Assistance and Cooperation Programme covering the period 2007 – 2011 has three main components: reproductive health, population and development, and gender. The available budget of the Programme is 2.25 million USD.
