Members of the Union Council laid flowers at the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great in central Chisinau on March 27. The unionists commemorated thus 96 years of Bessarabia’s union with Romania, of 1918. Those attending the event said this day is important for all the Moldovan citizens. It is a historical day that celebrates the reunification of the Romanian nation. In the current political and geopolitical context, the subject of the union is topical again, IPN reports.

Head of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko, who is one of the coordinators of the Union Council, said that the Union Day this year coincides with the start of a campaign to inform the people about the advantages of Moldova’s union with Romania. The campaign is launched on the initiative of the Union Council and other Romanian political entities with the aim of preventing the rigging of the census of this May.

Writer Sergiu Afanasiu, an active member of the Union Council, has told IPN that more and more people consider that the union is a solution to the problems they face and fewer people think about the union as a correction of the historical mistakes. The government includes persons who do not cultivate the national dignity and the feeling of affiliation to the national historical values. “We need dignified and honest people with national values and principles in power,” stated Sergiu Afanasiu.

96 years ago, the Council of the Country voted in favor of Bessarabia’s union with Romania. Bessarabia could keep its autonomy and could have its own legislative body.
