The “Geotube” project implemented at the Chisinau Wastewater Treatment Station from January 1 this year will help eliminate the unpleasant smell emitted by the station until this summer. The pilot project “Geotube” completed at the end of last year showed the mud can be dried during three months, as against 18 moths earlier. The Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca paid a working visit to the Wastewater Treatment Station on January 19, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Constantin Becciev, the director of SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” informed that about 90,000 cubic meters of mud had been drained as part of the pilot project “Geotube”. There were used 40 sacks of different sizes that occupied only 1.25 hectares of platform. According to Becciev, six hectares of drying platforms would have been needed to dry the mud using the previous technologies. The mud pumped within this period was drained during a month. Earlier this process took one year and a half.
Becciev also said that during the pilot project they determined the optimum size of the sacks that will be used in continuation. So far, all the environment protection institutions approved of the given project.
Dorin Chirtoaca demanded that the works planed to be carried out under the project be finished by summer. According to him, the mud drying works will contribute to a better ecological situation and will significantly diminish the unpleasant smell in the area. He stressed that the reconstruction works on the Wastewater Treatment Station will start only after the platforms are freed from mud.
The pilot project “Geotube” was launched in September last year and was implemented by SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” in cooperation with the Dutch company “Tencate”.
