The United States will continue to support the Republic of Moldova and encourages the formation of a new Government as soon as possible, with concrete commitments for reforms, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Department of Treasury Daleep Singh said in meeting with Head of Parliament Andrian Candu in Chisinau, IPN reports.

According to the Parliament’s press service, the main subjects discussed in the meeting referred to the democratic transformations in Moldova, implementation of reforms assumed as an associate state of the EU, especially for remedying the situation in the financial-banking sector and strengthening it, and to the sociopolitical developments in the country.

The U.S. official reiterated the United States’ support for Moldova’s efforts to implement the reform agenda and take immediate measures to ensure stability.

Andrian Candu said the Republic of Moldova now faces major political and economic challenges. To deal with them, a series of profound, structural reforms are needed, designed to restore the people’s and development partners’ confidence in the country’s European future. “The situation in the Republic of Moldova will not change if the system is not changed and only particular persons are replaced,” he stated.

Among other subjects discussed were the situation in the energy sector, the implementation stage of the projects to ensure interconnection with the gas and power networks of Romania, measures to fight corruption and the expectations of the EU peer review mission of Moldovan rule of law institutions.
