The administration of the State University of Moldova (USM) intends to reconstruct dormitories No. 6, 7 and 8 situated on Pan Halippa St. The buildings are in a bad state of repair and the authorities even considered demolishing them. The pluvial water that accumulates in the area after torrential rain endangers their resistance. Grigore Rotaru, head of the USM’s Institutional Development Department, has told Info-Prim Neo that the last time these dorms were examined in 2007. “During torrential rain, the water pours towards the foundation of the buildings as they are situated at a lower level than the street,” he stated. The dormitories were erected in 1962 – 1964 and the exploitation period of 40 years expired. The USM’s administration submitted a letter to the Government, asking establishing a public-private partnership for renovating the three buildings. The university waits for the executive’s decision in order to initiate this procedure that may last. Grigore Rotaru believes the reconstruction works will start not sooner than in two years. A reconstruction plan was drafted for the reconstruction of dormitory No. 3. They are now considering the possibility of erecting an attack-like storey on top. The Chisinau City Hall is to issue the urbanism certificate needed to go on. Attempts had been made during the last five years to demolish dormitories No. 6, 7 and 8. Every time, the idea was abandoned after the students staged protests.
