After the elections to the European Parliament, we will clearer see the possible developments during the next five years. To a certain extent, the Republic of Moldova can expect particular changes, but no major changes should take place as the ratification of the Association Agreement was decided not only by the European Parliament, but also by the EU member states, ex-Parliament Speaker Valeriu Ghiletski was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “Country” on Vocea Basarabiei TV channel.
The politician said he does not think the internal situation in Moldova could lead to major changes on the part of the EU. “We want greater support from the EU, financial assistance and other kinds of assistance. We need a Government, preferably a pro-European one, with which the European institutions would have a dialogue and would review the roadmap so as to see what we have yet to do and how we will continue our cooperation,” he stated.
Valeriu Ghiletski noted he would like to see a more respectful and tolerant attitude to Moldova among the MEPs. He anticipates a low voter turnout among the Moldovans with Romanian passports at the EP elections as the Moldovan citizens do not feel directly the effects of the decisions adopted by the European institutions. “However, to the extent to which we participate, we will be able to have a say in these elections.”
According to the politician, the parliamentary and presidential elections in Romania will motivate more the Moldovans to go and vote.
The European Parliament elections will take place on May 26.
