Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta wants Romania to be the greatest supporter of Moldova’s European integration and of the Moldovan pro-European Government. He made such a statement in a news conference at the Chisinau International Airport after he had a meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Iurie Leanca. The Romanian official had a layover in Moldova on his way to Georgia, IPN reports.
“On the way to Tbilisi, we wanted to review the state of the bilateral projects we implement and propose, related to the support that Romania must and has the duty to offer to Moldova in accelerating the European integration and developing the infrastructure and the public institutions,” said Victor Ponta.
He also said that on March 18 he will have a meeting in Athens with the Prime Minister of Greece, which holds the presidency of the EU. “I want to be sure that all the procedures are performed in time so that the Moldovans travel freely in the EU by May 25. This is the fastest message of support that Europe gives to Moldova’s European course,” stated Victor Ponta.
The situation in Ukraine was another subject discussed. Victor Ponta said that on the one hand, Romania, which is a member of the EU and NATO, has positions that are perfectly consolidated and coordinated with the European parents, but all the efforts are aimed at Moldova. “Europe and our transatlantic partners support Ukraine on its pro-European path, but definite effort must be aimed at Moldova because last November it had the courage to take a decision that we all welcomed. This courage must be supported,” said Victor Ponta.
Iurie Leanca said the visit by the Romanian Premier is not accidental. Today, March 14, the EU transport ministers endorsed the European Parliament’s decision to liberalize the visa regime for Moldova. The role played by Romania in helping Moldova to achieve this objective is very great.
