MP Victor Popa said the work he will do at the Constitutional Court is closer to his soul. He was named to this post by Parliament in the March 29 sitting, IPN reports.
”I think the post of judge is the peak for a doctor habilitate of constitutional law. Besides implementing theory, I will ensure the constitutionality of the laws,” the new Constitutional Court judge told the journalists.
Victor Popa admitted that as an MP, he made certain mistakes when formulating and adopting laws, which were later declared unconstitutional, but said that everyone can make mistake and the Constitutional Court’s goal is to make sure that the supreme law is not violated.
The Liberal MP was elected judge by 51 votes in favor and 26 votes against. Unaffiliated lawmaker Sergiu Sirbu, who voted for Popa, was attacked verbally by his former colleagues from the Communist Party.
For his part, Sergiu Sirbu asked Victor Popa how he will detach himself from the political affiliation. The MP answered that he entered Parliament on the lists of the Liberal Party, but never was a party member.
“I gave my vote consciously. We must unblock the situation at the Constitutional Court. I don’t care what my former colleagues from the Communist Party say as they promote only the party interests,” said Sergiu Sirbu.
The Communists voted against Victor Popa. They demanded that the bill be withdrawn from the agenda as pressure is exerted on the lawmakers to vote it.
