The lawyers for former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, in a hearing on February 17, asked that their client should be investigated on the outside. After several hours of deliberations, the judges of the Buiucani Court rejected the defense’s request. Liberal-Democratic MP Tudor Deliu told the press that he asked for a meeting with Vlad Filat at the Chisinau-based Penitentiary No. 13, but his application was rejected, IPN reports.
Tudor Deliu stated that he had an information meeting with Vlad Filat’s lawyers, who said that the case is a political one because it does not contain materials that would prove the politician’s guilt. “In particular, the indictment does not include evidence showing that Mister Filat committed an offense. He is charged with some very vague things. The prosecution’s accusations are unfounded. That’s why we think that through the agency of the lawyers, we will obtain the release of Mister Filat so that he is investigated outside prison,” he said.
The MP also said that he asked for a meeting with Vlad Filat, but didn’t manage to discuss with this. “We were at Penitentiary No. 13, but weren’t allowed to meet him. They told us that we can communicate with any detainee, not yet with Vlad Filat, saying they obey orders,” he noted.
Prosecutor Adriana Betisor said that an ordinary hearing in the case of the former Premier was held today. She noted that all the documents of the case are translated into Romanian, refuting the defense’s assertion that this is not so.
