Of the total daily volume of solid waste generated in Chisinau, some 15% is recyclable. It should be extracted and recycled by companies able to provide such services. Councilwoman Ina Coşeru (PAS) made this proposal as the Chisinau Municipal Council adopted a decision to implement waste sorting technologies.

Ina Coşeru told a press conference on Thursday that a further 15% can be converted into waste-to-energy bales. “These bales can be co-incinerated in special furnaces to produce energy, and the waste disposal legislation allows this. So we have at least 30% of waste which, thanks to this decision, we can spare the Ţânţăreni landfill of,” said Ina Coşeru.

The PAS group also promises a solution for organic waste, which accounts for 60% of the total. “There will be another decision to enable the construction of fermentators.”

Coşeru added that the next step would be to find the money needed to get the sorting service running, and a working group instituted by the Council already has several solutions that will be put up for public debate.

Councilman Vasile Grădinaru, leader of the PAS group, noted that the high amounts of waste deposited at the municipal landfill poses serious environmental threats. “The landfill must be exploited correctly and with a reduction of volumes in mind, which is possible only if we start sorting and recycling waste.”
