Voter turnout in Chisinau municipality close to 27% at 4pm

About 169,000 residents of Chisinau municipality with the right to vote cast their ballots by 4pm. This is 26.59% of those eligible to vote. In the first round of the mayoral elections on May 20, about 154,000 people voted by the same hour, IPN reports.

The voters aged over 71 are the most active ones, with a turnout of 47.23%. These are followed by the voters aged between 56 and 70, with a turnout of 42.47%. In the suburban communities, the voters in Tohatin are the most active ones, with a turnout of 27.96%. The turnout in Bacioi was the lowest, of only about 17%.

In Chisinau, the most active voters are those from Rascani district (28.65%). These are followed, in descending order, by the voters in Centru (28.16%), Botanica (27.69%), Buiucani (27.16%) and Ciocana (26.15%) districts.

Some 26.23% of the women put on the voter rolls and 27.61% of the men made their choice.

In a press briefing, Chisinau District Electoral Council deputy head Ina Babin said the Council received no complaints so far.

There is no minimum turnout of voters required for the runoff vote to be validated. The candidate who gains the largest number of votes emerges victorious. The elected mayor will hold office for a year, until the local general mayoral elections of 2019.
