The National Union of Independence War Veterans calls upon the people to join in the protest planned by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” and its adherents for April 24. In a news conference at IPN, the veterans expressed their concern about the sociopolitical and economic situation in the country and called on the population not to be indifferent and to come to the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau this Sunday to protest peacefully. The combatants were joined by a group of young activists of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”, who invited the young people, students and teachers to the protest.
The Union’s executive director Gheorghe Slutu said the participants in the protest will seek the dismissal of the current government and the calling of early parliamentary elections that would be held simultaneously with the presidential elections. Such problems as the wrongdoings in justice, the rises in taxes and the bank frauds can be solved only by replacing the current government. The protesters will also demand to annul the Government decision by which the money stolen from the banking system was transformed into state debt, and to also increase the pensions and salaries.
Union member Constantin Boisteanu said the veterans of the 1992 war and of the Afghanistan war in the April 24 protest will have the role of maintaining public order. The veterans will cooperate with the employees of the Ministry of the Interior so as not to allow instigators to destabilize the peaceful protest. The press reports about the possible devastation planned by the veterans are aimed at misleading the people.
The head of the Union’s Chisinau local organization Mihai Tomacinschi said the veterans will not allow the use of violence during the protest. He called on the senior administration not to resort to provocations. The veterans will react if they identify attempts to destabilize the situation and will yield the instigators up to the police.
A group of young activists of the Platform “Dignity and Truth” made an appeal to the students and teachers, asking these to come to the protest because the current government is illegitimate and is unable to ensure the country’s future. Activist Mihaela Popescu called on the young people to mobilize and to take part in the protest so as to recover the state institutions.
