Starting next year, war veterans will receive monthly state allowances in the amount of 40% of the value of the national minimum salary, which is currently 2,000 lei, while veterans with disabilities acquired as a result of war will get allowances in the amount of 60% or 3,000 lei. The size of the allowance will be updated with each increase in the national minimum salary, says a draft law that was given a first reading by Parliament, IPN reports.

Under the bill, war veterans who fall into more than one category will benefit from a 30% higher allowance. The monthly allowance will be granted regardless of whether the war veteran is employed or benefits from another type of social welfare.

The bill authors also propose that the money allocated for sanatorium treatment and for covering transport expenses should be monetized and distributed monthly. Thus, war veterans will be able to manage the money themselves and identify the sanatorium and the period for treatment they want.

The bill also separates the categories of war veterans from the other categories of veterans, which are regulated by the Law on Veterans. The draft law defines the status of war veterans and presents the categories of war veterans. The role of war veterans’ associations in safeguarding the interests of war veterans is also regulated.

The draft law is to be given a final reading. The authors propose that it should enter into force at the beginning of 2025.
