Meteorologists predict mild temperatures for the first day of the new year, with maximum temperatures rising to +9 degrees Celsius. Although that exceeds the norm for this period, these wouldn’t be record-breaking temperatures. On 1 January 1971 air temperature had reached +13 degrees.
Contacted by IPN, Lidia Treşcilo, of the State Hydro-meteorology Service, said that the coldest night of January 1 in Moldova was logged in 2015, when temperatures oscillated between -17 and -20 degrees Celsius.
The temperatures forecasted for the first day of 2018 are comparable to those from 2007.
According to meteorologists, average daily temperature on 1 January (across several years) varies throughout the country from -0…+4 (Cahul Weather Station) to -3…+1 (Briceni MS). In 2017, on the night of 1 January minimum temperatures oscillated between -2…-6 degrees Celsius, and highs between +4…+7.
Every two to three years, snow falls on 1 January. There will be no snowfall this year.
On 31 December, during the day, we will observe highs up to +6 degrees Celsius, and lows on New Year’s Eve will vary between 0 and -5 degrees Celsius. On 1 January, temperatures will be around +4…+9 degrees Celsius.
