The harvesting of wheat has started in Moldova and the estimated yield is 1.4-1.5 million tonnes of wheat. Most of the wheat – one million tonnes – is traditionally destined for export, said Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, quoted by IPN.

Vladimir Bolea noted that 320,000 hectares were sown with wheat this year. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the area is by 20,000 ha smaller than last year. In discussions, local officials said that the overall the state of crops, with small exceptions in some districts, is satisfactory.

“A total harvest of 1.4-1.5 million tonnes of wheat was estimated. We consume about 350,000 tonnes of wheat domestically, which is processed, made into flour and consumed by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. About 70,000 tonnes of wheat are reused by farmers as seed material. 180,000-185,000 tonnes are intended for animal feed. The rest of the wheat is usually exported. So, out of 1.5 million tonnes, about 1 million is exported,” explained the Minister of Agriculture.

In Anenii Noi district, one farmer reported an average harvest of 3.8 tonnes of wheat per hectare, in Soroca – 3.1 tonnes of wheat per hectare, in Calarasi – 3.4 tonnes per hectare, in Ungheni – 4.2 tonnes per hectare, in Cahul – 2 tonnes of wheat per hectare. Even though they all apply advanced technologies, high-quality seed material, they have approximately similar expenses, but the amount of wheat is very different.

"So, they all used the same type of fertilizers, they all applied the same technologies and, in the end, the difference is very big and the price is dictated by supply and demand and by the commodities exchange. Subsequently, obviously the economic results of these five farmers will be very different, because the selling price does not take into account your expenses or productivity,” said Vladimir Bolea.
