Commentator Corneliu Gurin, expert in electoral processes, said the tight score of the two candidates for mayor of Chisinau shows that society is polarized and there is a battle between two extremes. “The battle was fought more at ideological level and less at the level of real, previous or future activities of the candidates. It wasn’t a campaign of ideas, messages, platforms, solutions and proposals. It was not a sufficiently clean campaign. It was a campaign between two opposed forces,” Corneliu Gurin stated for Info-Prim Neo. According to the expert of the Association for Participative Democracy, the winner in this case should realize that the situation is special and he should take into account the opinions of the other almost 50% of electors who voted for another candidate. “Promotion of the party’s policies should not be a priority. Effort must be made to implement the platform and solve the problems. The winner should realize that society is very polarized and victory is not clear, especially because there is uncertainty about the composition of the future Municipal Council,” said Corneliu Gurin. He also said that the representatives of the Alliance for European Integration won the post of mayor in almost 2/3 of the settlements and most of the seats on the local and district councils. This means that the present administration is supported, while the PCRM not very much. “The state of affairs in the capital city is slightly different because there is ideology and more advertising. Thus, it is not convenient for the PCRM to promote or determine early election. They are those who determine early elections as the situation depends on them. The people do not want early elections either,” said Corneliu Gurin. The election results made public by the Central Election Commission show that the Liberal Party’s candidate Dorin Chirtoaca won 50.60% of the ballot, while his Communist opponent Igor Dodon – 49.40%
