Varvara Zingan, a resident of Taslac village of Grigoriopol district, who has protested in Chisinau for two years and nine months against the illegal detention of her son, asks the senior authorities and civil society to help set free her son Vitalie Zingan, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for murder.
In a news conference on April 23, the woman said her son was convicted on the basis of false evidence and signatures and is not acquitted because investigators, prosecutors and judges have committed illegalities in this case, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Varvara Zingan asserts she has incontestable proofs that her son did not commit the murder for which he was sentenced. She related that a quarrel started nine years ago in front of a bar in Butor village. Her son was at that place. The father of one of the young men involved in the argument came with a gun. He was accompanied by a relative who suffered a backbone fracture in the struggle and died in the hospital the next day. Vitalie Zingan was accused of murdering the man The sentence was passed by the Court of Appeals in 2006. Varvara Zingan said her son was not summoned to that hearing. According to the woman, the young man was imprisoned in 2008. The Supreme Court of Justice upheld the decision of the Court of Appeals, whereby Zingan was sentenced to 12 years in jail. The woman said her son is very ill and is afraid that he may die in prison.
Varvara Zingan is sure that the evidence was fabricated and asks Acting President Mihai Ghimpu to intervene as the former governors and current Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko disappointed her because they discussed with her, but did nothing.
She also said that the Transnistrians stop trusting Moldova because it allows convicting innocent people. Vitalie Zingan, 30, is the father of two children – a girl aged 5 and a boy aged 2.
In a communique issued on April 21, the Prosecutor General's Office says Varvara Zingan's protest is useless. According to the communique, in 2001 Vitalie Zingan and another four persons attacked three men with baseball bats as the local farmers refused to pay the annual tribute of US$5,000. One of the three farmers died as a result of his injuries. The others received minor injuries and managed to escape.
In July 2007, the Supreme Court of Justice sentenced Zingan Vitalie to 12 years behind bars for deliberate murder. The other offenders were also sentenced. The decision is irrevocable.
