The women in Moldova have enormous potential for doing business, but this is not realized. If there are no discrepancies as regards gender equality, if the women and men benefit from equal treatment on employment, the economy and the productivity of companies will grow. The issue was developed at a conference centering on the women’s empowerment principles, IPN reports.
Adam Amberg, head of the Cooperation for Development Section of the Embassy of Sweden in Moldova, said that we cannot speak about equality and results in the economy without corporate social responsibility and without a powerful commitment of the business community and a common effort of all the stakeholders. “The equal treatment of woman and men can improve the business and, respectively, the company’s profit. It is not only about empathy, but also about the efficient management of a company,” he stated.
Lucreția Ciurea, monitoring and evaluation officer at UN Women, said the empowerment of women is aimed not at bringing benefits to a part of society, but at removing the discrepancies and illegalities that appear between the two categories of employees. Today the women, even if they work as hard as men, have smaller salaries. “The discrepancies at a certain moment affect psychologically. The people become frustrated, emotional and there are many other effects that generate problems. We want a change,” stated Lucreția Ciurea.
Iulia Costin, director of the Organization for the Development of the SME Sector, noted the potential of women was demonstrated as part of the program “Women in Business” that was launched in 2016. The program showed the women want to become involved and manage to develop businesses.
Alexandru Trubca, expert of the Business Consulting Institute, stated the Labor Code and the public policies in the field should be amended so as to support the empowerment of women. The employers should be obliged to create safe childcare areas intended for employees with children younger than three. The single women with children should be offered additional annual leave.
