The national youth football team of Moldova were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Cup of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic Countries. On January 23, they were beaten by Ukraine 5-0. This is the third consecutive defeat suffered by Moldova at the competition in Russia. The fate of the game was decided in the first half, when the Ukrainians scored through Miakushko and Karavaev. Moldova’s situation worsened in the 23rd minute, when fullback Ion Sandu was eliminated for fault. In the second half of the match, Ukraine scored three more goals, through Iakovenko, Meskhia, and Ivanko. Despite the defeats, Alexandru Kurteyan’s pupils will continue to play. They will compete for the 5th-8th places in the mini-tournament. On January 25, Moldova will meet Tajikistan, which lost to Lithuania 3-5 in quarterfinals.
