Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko told a news conference on Thursday that the explosion that happened in central Chisinau on Wednesday evening was an act of terrorism organized by a criminal person or group of persons, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Valeriu Zubko does not consider that the explosion occurred accidentally and that somebody took the grenade to the festivities held in Chisinau's central square with no ill will. He said that two threatening phone calls were made to Premier Vlad Filat's anteroom from abroad yesterday at about 10.00.
According to Minister of the Interior Victor Catan, there are several persons suspected of causing the explosion. Some of the victims saw a young man 1.70-1.75 meters in height, dressed in black.
“At first, we thought it was a murder attempt, but analyzing the situation we came to the conclusion that it was an act of terrorism,” the minister said. He also said that 12 persons of those injured in the explosion remained at the Emergency Hospital, but they are out of danger.
Victor Catan said that more than a half of the police personnel were dispatches to ensure public order during the concert. Even so, they could not monitor all of the over 80,000 people who gathered in the square.
[UPDATE] The Prosecutor General's Office specifies in a communique that the phone calls threatening the Prime Minister were made yesterday, on October 14, between 21.30 and 22.30.
