Rescuers issue warnings over tradition to plunge into icy water on Epiphany

Teams of rescuers will monitor the situation near lakes on request on Epiphany, when people use to dive into icy water, the General Inspectorate for Emergences has said. The people are urged to plunge only into specially laid out places, IPN reports.

The rescuers warn to enter the water in small groups so as to avoid damaging the layer of ice or falling under it. Only the persons who are physically fit are recommended to enter the icy water and this should be done cautiously. The minors must be under the supervision of parents.

In case of situations of risk, one should call the 112 Service.

On Epiphany, which is celebrated on January 19, Christians go to church to take Holy Water, while on January 20 it is observed the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, which closes the winter holiday season.
