Road taxes could be included in excise duties on oil products

The draft fiscal and customs policy document for 2021 suggests including road taxes in the excise duties on oil products. The bill was proposed for public debates by the Ministry of Finance, IPN reports.

The authorities specify the disadvantage of the current system resides in the absence of a close correlation between the level of utilization of the road infrastructure and the size of the road tax. It is suggested amending the current mechanism for paying the road tax by motor vehicles registered in the Republic of Moldova by excluding the tax for using roads by motor vehicles registered in the Republic of Moldova simultaneously with the rise in excise duties on oil products.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the measure is aimed at introducing a proportional tax on citizens who use roads in the Republic of Moldova, depending on how much each citizen travels.

Statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance show 221 million liters of gasoline and 706 million liters of diesel fuel were imported in 2019.

The collections from road taxes came to 938 million lei.
