Romanians do not hurry to cross border after visa regime was lifted

After the visa regime for Romanian travelers was annulled, the Romanians that were coming to Moldova regularly did not flock to cross the border. The traffic at border crossing points is now less heavy than four months ago. According to the Romanian press, which makes reference to the Iasi Border Police, about 1,500 persons crossed the Moldovan border daily before the visa regime was introduced. Now this figure fell to under 1,000. The Iasi Border Police say the traffic at the border crossing points in Sculeni and Nicolina decreased by about 40% over the last three months owing to the introduction of visas. The visa regime for Romanian travelers introduced after the April 7 protests was annulled by the caretaker president of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu by presidential decree on September 17. From September 18, the Romanian citizens can enter Moldova visa free. When the visa regime was introduced, the then head of state Vladimir Voronin expelled the Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau Filip Teodorescu and accused the Romanian authorities of staging the April 7 protests. After the Romanian consul Ion Noica resigned in connection with a sexual scandal, Romania has delegated no official representative to Chisinau.
