Supreme Court of Justice to decide fate of building located on Pushkin St
The Supreme Court of Justice this week is to examine the Ministry of Culture’s application concerning the building situated at 24 Pushkin St, which was leased to Moldova’s Future Foundation for 29 years. The four creation unions that have their offices in that building and risk remaining on the street announced they will go to the hearing, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Moldova’s Future Foundation won the right to use the building under a contract signed in 2009 with the state-run Impresario Agency of the Ministry of Culture. In a meeting on September 20, the head of the Theater Union of Moldova (UNITEM) Sandu Grecu said the swindle planned by former Minister of Culture Artur Cozma and the then head of the Impresario Agency Oleg Baraliuc may leave at least 400 members of the four creation unions without offices.
“Two days before the investiture of the Filat Government, Baraliuc transferred the building from Pushkin St, a movie theater, the lake located near the City’s Gates with 160 hectares of land and other state property to Moldova’s Future Foundation,” said Sandu Grecu.
According to him, UNITEM owned a building on Alexandru cel Bun St, but it was deprived of it by the Soviet of Ministers in 1987. It was given instead the third floor and a room from the fourth floor in the building situated on Pushkin St. However, UNITEM pays rent of 260,000 lei a year.
So far, Moldova’s Future won the case in two courts. The Supreme Court of Justice is to pass judgment on September 23. “During private discussions, we were told that we do not have those amounts of money that are paid by the foundation to judges,” Sandu Grecu said.
Attending the meeting, Minister of Culture Boris Focsa said he was surprised to find out that the two courts ruled in favor of the foundation as the lease contract contains illegalities. He also said that the Impresario Agency was to be liquidated, but it became known that the Agency has a debt of 5 million lei that must be paid by the Ministry of Culture. Oleg Baraliuc went abroad and cannot be convoked.
Writer Andrei Burac considers the present administration of Moldova should get involved and solve this case. The former head of UNITEM Aurelian Danila said the state must protect the people of culture whom it sent from one office to another. The participants in the meeting formulated a letter to the authorities, asking them to deal with the illegalities committed against them.
