Government could compensate farmers affected by frost

The Government is considering the possibility of compensating the farmers affected by the recent frost, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catalbuga announced in the program “Resumé” on RLIVE channel.

"We cannot control nature," said the minister, stressing that the authorities have already started assessing the damage caused by the low temperatures through the agency of local agricultural divisions.

"We are totaling up the figures in order to come up with solutions. We will initiate the ascertaining procedure at the local level and will later adopt a final decision as to how we will act at Government level," stated Ludmila Catlabuga.

The minister highlighted the efforts made by farmers to protect their crops from extreme weather phenomena. She also noted a unique initiative implemented for the first time this year – the installation of an anti-frost windmill in an orchard in Drochia.

"It is premature to announce a figure regarding the compromised crops. However, from discussions with farmers, we know that they implement prevention methods in orchards. In a cherry orchard in Drochia, for example, there was set up a windmill that minimizes the frost pressure. Various measures are taken to minimize the persisting risk," said Minister Ludmila Catlabuga.

The State Weretiger Service issued a yellow frost code that is valid until April 13. The coldest weather was forecast for April 11, when nighttime temperatures will drop to -5 degrees Celsius.
